Breaking: radio ratings results
Survey 4 results are out now. Here’s what we’ve been listening to lately. It’s not great news for two Brisbane stations.
This is going to be quick and to the point. GfK has released the results of survey 4 for 2024, covering listening from April 27 to July 5.
It’s good news for 4BH and Triple M; bad news for KIIS973 and 4BC.
The overall winners in terms of audience share were: Triple M followed by B105, Nova, 4BH, KIIS973, ABC Brisbane and 4BC.
In the important Breakfast slot, Triple M’s Marto, Margaux and Dan was No. 1, followed very closely by B105’s Stav, Abby and Matt, then Nova (down from a winning position last survey), 4BH, KIIS, ABC Brisbane and 4BC.
Both KIIS’s Robin, Kip and Corey and 4BC’s Peter Fegan had substantial losses which might put their shows in jeopardy.
Bob Gallagher at 4BH will be popping the champagne, however, with his program on the AM band now established as a credible challenger to the FM giants.
For those following the fortunes of Kyle Sandilands, the Kyle and Jackie O Show added listener share substantially in Sydney and rebounded slightly in Melbourne, but it remains well behind its rivals.
What does it all mean? Do these results give enough ammunition for KIIS to pursue a networking strategy at the expense of Robin, Kip and Corey in Brisbane? Will there be changes at 4BC (which is understood to be for sale, along with 2GB and 3AW, which are doing well still but lost listeners in this survey)?
I’ll post some more analysis of the ratings in coming days.
Mister Brisbane is free to read, but if you appreciate what I’m doing here, and/or
at The Wrinkle and Radio Bert, you can buy me a coffee.
Don’t throw stones
The votes are in and Brisbane’s new theatre, the fifth venue at QPAC, will be called The Glasshouse. Which is an appropriate and safe name.
It was, apparently, a clear winner, although 900 alternative names were suggested. I’m assuming that many voters, like me, wanted to honour an individual who had made a contribution to the city’s theatrical past.
The much-delayed theatre will open next year.
P.S.
If you voted in Triple J’s Hottest of Australian Songs, the results are being compiled this week and the winners will be played from 8am AEST on Saturday, July 26. You can follow the count and listen (probably not to the songs I voted for) here.
Still on the subject of radio. This story in The Australian claims that the Nine Network has paid millions to Ray Hadley to keep him off the air. The report raises more question, and I’ll unpack some of those in the future. For now, let’s just say that having big ratings aren’t necessarily all you need to stay at the top in commercial media.
Disclaimer: Brett Debritz has been recently heard in segments on ABC Brisbane and once worked as a producer at 4BC.
