I took a drive to Wynnum. It hardly counts as a day out. In fact, I spent barely any time there at all — just enough to decide that it really could do with a makeover. Where Redcliffe, as I noted last week, has undergone something of a transition along the seafront, Wynnum hasn’t really made the most of its position straddling the coast.
One great difference is that at Wynnum the commercial centre is set back a block from the beach (or what beach there is), so the sea views are largely left to the occupiers of private properties (some of which are being done up) and the odd cafe dotted along the road. And, although one person had braved the ancient swimming enclosure while I was there, it has none of the appeal of the swimming pool along the Redcliffe waterfront. I know it’s heritage-listed, so he council’s options may be limited in terms of its renovation, but right now it looks like a health hazard.
Having said that, the view over Moreton Bay is quite pleasant — especially if you look south towards the Wynnum-Manly Yacht Club rather than north towards the shipping terminal. And there were picnickers in the park, even on a week day, as well as a few people wandering the path along the seafront.
SIGN OF OLD TIMES
When I was in Redcliffe a couple of weeks ago, I snapped this photo of the Yabbey Road fish-and-chips shop. I know of one in Brisbane called the Codfather. Anyone else have a clever shop name to share?
IRRITATION LOCATION
I get annoyed when people refer to the “Boondall Entertainment Centre”. It’s the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall. A venue that size that existed purely to entertain Boondall would have gone broke long ago.
CHANGING STATIONS
I’m not great at keeping secrets. But here’s one I did manage to keep under my proverbial hat for a couple of weeks until it was announced yesterday: Brisbane’s News Talk 4BC is changing frequency from 1116AM to 882. It’s a straight swap with its sister station, 4BH, designed to make 4BC more accessible on the AM dial. Of course, lots of people listen to radio on DAB+, and increasingly on phones and other smart devices, but the change will deliver a better experience for the many, many listeners who still have AM receivers. It happens on October 8.
STREET SCENE
Seen in the car park of my local shopping centre. It’s all very well, but what’s the number?
FEEDBACK
On people with well-known names, Christine says: “Paul Newman is … the most famous fisherman I know.”
