Mister Brisbane: Explorer arrives
P&O's Pacific Explorer has become the first ship to dock at our new Cruise Terminal
It’s no secret that I’m a cruise fan. And I’m delighted that I’ll soon be able to take an ocean voyage from the new Brisbane Cruise Terminal, which has just seen the arrival and departure of its first ship.
P&O’s Pacific Explorer docked on Thursday as part of a cruise beginning and ending in Sydney, but soon both P&O and (even sooner) its sister company Princess Cruises will be offering voyages from and back to Brisbane.
Other cruise lines will follow suit.
As P&O points out in a media release: “Pacific Explorer’s arrival restarting the $1 billion cruise industry in Queensland — more than $5 billion nationally — comes 90 years after the first ever P&O cruise ship, the mail steamer Strathaird, called at Brisbane on a seven-night cruise from Sydney.”
I know some people will be nonplussed about this, but it certainly excites me. If you are into travel by sea, I suggest you cruise over to my travel site, brraas.com, where I’ve written a lot about the subject (and shall do again).
RADIO RESULTS
I was going write a big think piece here about the state of radio in Brisbane. But since I am fresh out of that industry (I left 4BC back in March), I thought I’d just offer a summary of the ratings results released this week, and then throw a question out there.
The overall winners in survey 3 were Nova, followed by KIIS 973, the soon-to-be-no-more 4KQ, B105 and Triple M, in a very tight field, all with a people 10+ share of between 10 and 11 per cent. Back in the pack were ABC Brisbane (8.5pc), Triple J (6.7), 4BC (5.8), ABC Classic FM (2.7), ABC Radio National (2.3), 4BH (1.8, but with a recent change of format yet to show up) and ABC News Radio (1.6).
In breakfast, the winners were a resurgent B105 (Stav, Abby and Matt), Nova’s Ash, Luttsy and Susie, and ABC’s Craig and Loretta, with KIIS, Triple M and 4KQ not that far behind.
My question to you is: what does all this say about the Brisbane listening audience and about radio itself as a medium?
If you’re looking for some more detail on the numbers, try this link. I’ll weigh in with some ideas of my own not too far down the track.
FEEDBACK
On last edition’s “what’s this” bakery item, most people called it a cream bun, but some questioned the inclusion of sultanas in the mix.
Others agreed with me that it wasn’t, as advertised, a Boston bun.
Philip says: “Looks like the baker got lazy while making a Hot-cross Bun.”
Walter: “Not on my diabetes type 2 good foods list…that’s what it is damn it.”
