As I write this, the Queensland border has been open, letting in thousands of people — Queenslanders who’ve been trapped and other Australians who want to come and visit. As we have been warned over and over again, they’re bringing COVID with them. It’s the Christmas present we don’t need. But, of course, it had to happen.
Unless things go terribly pear-shaped, I will be taking advantage of new border rules to step outside of this state for the first time since I returned to Australia from Thailand more than two years ago. That’s a long time for a life-long travelaholic (see photo).
On Christmas eve, I’ll be on a plane to Darwin — hoping to achieve what Santa couldn’t back in 1974. I do not, however, intend to leave behind a trail of destruction. I might note here that I really wanted to go on a cruise, or fly to Asia again for my holiday; but that just isn’t going to happen.
Before then I have a lot of actual work to do, and I’ll be catching up with friends and family. Because of that, barring anything I deem to be an emergency, this will be the final Mister Brisbane installment for this year. I’m not sure when it’ll begin again in 2022. Perhaps it won’t, or perhaps it will in a slightly different form. Or it might be more of the same …
In any case, I wish those who observe Christmas a very merry one, and everybody else a good time after their own fashion.
And for those of you who haven’t already done so, give yourself and your loved ones the gift of life this Christmas — if you are medically able, get the jab!
BRIS BAN?
Q: When is an Australian tour not an Australian tour? A: When Brisbane isn’t on the itinerary.
Crowded House have announced a national tour and tickets went on sale on Friday.
They’ll play Perth on April 1 and 2 next year, followed by Adelaide on April 5, Melbourne on April 8 and 9, Sydney on April 12 and 13, Bowral on April 16 and Bluesfest, Byron Bay on April 17.
I know a lot of Queenslanders will go to the Byron Bay gig, but why no Brisbane date?
The band’s new album is called Dreamers are Waiting. Looks like we’ll be waiting even longer than most.
A few decades ago, I was tangentially involved in a bid to get The Style Council to play in Brisbane, but that never happened. Can anybody else remember times we were dudded?

And finally, something to ponder over the Christmas break …
