Shooting the messenger

It seems my suggestions about saving a flailing radio station are unwelcome in some quarters.

So, just like magic, a comment appeared and then, minutes later, disappeared from my Facebook page.

It was a reaction to my recent Mister Brisbane posts about the dire situation at Radio 4BC, which has seen sackings and other cost-cutting measures in the wake of disastrous ratings.

The comment, from somebody I hadn’t engaged with before, suggested that I had contributed to 4BC’s ill fortune by bringing attention to it.

I responded that I had written on many occasions that I had great affection for 4BC and wanted to see it survive and thrive under the new owner, Tapt Media.

I added that my commentary was generally constructive and that I did not subscribe to the theory that problems cease to exist if you don’t talk (or write) about them.

By the next time I visited the post, the comment — and, thus, my response to it — had been deleted.

It’s all very mysterious. But the bottom line is: 4BC management don’t need my help to tank the Titanic.

They don’t need to read or heed my suggestions* for its survival and revival, either. But they really should do something to turn away from the iceberg looming large ahead of them rather than throw the loyal crew overboard.

*I still think that adopting simple suggestions such as investing in proper market research, free of the blinkered idea that what works in Sydney will work in Brisbane, would be a good start...

Still in the world of radio, The Australian suggests today (Monday) that ARN was prepared to pay more than it did to settle its case with Kyle Sandilands. How much it will cost to formalise the separation with Jackie “O” Henderson remains to be seen.
