At a time when people are losing their jobs in the radio industry — more on that later — one network is offering ordinary Australians the chance to host a Breakfast show.
SCA’s Triple M announced in a media release:
This December, five brand-new Breakfast shows will go to air nationally for Pilot Week, a bold new initiative giving fresh voices a shot at the big time on Australia’s most iconic radio networks.
… Pilot Week is a national radio first: a week-long showcase of emerging Breakfast radio talent, with each new show having a chance to become the next staple of the Triple M lineup.
Entries will be reviewed over the coming weeks and narrowed down to a Top 10. From there, five final shows will be selected to broadcast nationally on Triple M from 6–8am, during Pilot Week, Monday December 15 to Friday December 19.
The release goes on to quote Matthew O’Reilly, SCA head of broadcast content, said: “Triple M has always been about big personalities, creating world-class content, think Andrew Denton, The Cage and The Hot Breakfast just to name a few. Pilot Week opens the door for fresh voices to jump behind the mic and have an opportunity for an exciting career in radio.
“The audio industry is booming, and there’s incredible creative energy across the country, from podcasters and comics to online storytellers. Triple M’s Pilot Week is the perfect opportunity for anyone who’s ever listened to Mick Molloy, James Brayshaw or Beau Ryan and thought, ‘I reckon I could do that!’”

KIIS goodbye
On October 22, 2006, I wrote for The Sunday Mail:
Five years after she was dumped as Jamie Dunn’s sidekick from Brisbane’s top-rating radio show, Robin Bailey will be in the driver’s seat when she makes her comeback on 97.3FM tomorrow.
“A woman is now the headline act — that’s a revolution,” said Bailey, who will join comedian Terry Hansen and “Barbecue” Bob Gallagher in the revamped line-up.
“When I was on B105 it was very much the Jamie Dunn show. Everyone’s moved on now. It’s faster and there’s more pressure on.”
Bailey went on to have a complicated, on-again, off-again relationship with the station, now branded KIIS97.3, but all that comes to an end in eight weeks.
Along with current co-hosts Kip Wightman and Corey Oates, she has been sacked, and they had something to say about it on air this morning.
For her part, Bailey said she was glad not to be leaving the building with her belongings in a carboard box, and having the opportunity to stay on air until December 12. But she said she didn’t believe she would work in radio again.
Wightman dismissed suggestions he would be a stay-at-home dad. Bailey and Wightman agreed that former Broncos NRL player Oates had proved himself and should get further media work.
